Deciding
on the goals for your Alpaca herd will help you decide what animals to select
for your particular situation. Budget of course is also a factor in your decision
making process.
If
you want to have show girls (or boys) quickly, then your choice of animals will
be different from a low cost starter herd. Similarly the return on investment
and time it takes to achieve those goals will be affected by the quality
and cost of animals you choose to purchase. There is some more discussion
about selection of animals at this link.
From
a business perspective you can take the 'buy low and sell high' approach which
will require a little more patience as you breed successive generations, each with
an improvement on the previous one. Your return takes longer as you keep selections
from successive generation as part of your breeding program. The other approach
is to 'invest more realize a larger/faster return' - acquiring a selection
of animals that have fewer breeding characteristics that need to be altered over
successive generations.
The
choice is yours of course, depending on needs and personal financial considerations.
Setting your goals, preparing financial returns and projecting the time time horizon is the
prudent thing to do before committing to a new business enterprise.
If
you are more of an Alpaca enthusiast rather than being driven by business or income, your
goals may be different.
